Things to Do in Caniçal: Madeira's Wild Eastern Tip, by Land and by Sea
Most visitors to Madeira hear about levadas, laurel forest and viewpoints above the clouds. Then they drive half an hour east, come out of the Caniçal tunnel, and discover the island has another face entirely.
The green stops here. What begins is red rock, ochre, constant wind and a line of cliffs running out into the Atlantic as though someone had torn the island open. This is Ponta de São Lourenço, the eastern tip of Madeira, and it is the least Madeiran landscape on the whole island.
Most lists of things to do in Caniçal name the same four items and stop there. This one is narrower. What is worth your time here, by land and by sea, and how to move between the two without losing half a day in the car.
The Ponta de São Lourenço Trail
The PR8 is the walk everyone comes for. Around eight kilometres there and back, about three hours at a normal pace, and almost no shade at any point.
Two practical things decide whether you enjoy it. The first is the hour: start early, before the sun hardens and before the car park at Baía d'Abra fills up, which on a summer morning happens well before ten. The second is the wind. It blows here on days when the rest of the island is still. That is part of the landscape, but it means a hat you can lose and a jacket you did not think you would need.
The trail ends at Casa do Sardinha, and from there most people turn back the way they came.
The Same Landscape, From the Water
The trail gives you the top of the cliffs. The boat gives you the bottom.
They are not the same place. From the water you see the layers in the rock, the sea caves cut into the base, the colour of the stone changing as the light moves, and Baía d'Abra opening in front of you rather than below you. The scale reads differently when the cliff is above your head instead of under your boots.
You also get the part that no trail reaches: the water itself, which on this side of the island stays clear well into the autumn.
Caniçal Beyond the Trail
The village itself was built on whaling and stopped in 1981. The Whale Museum tells that story honestly, including the uncomfortable parts, and it is worth an hour even if museums are not usually your thing.
Prainha, a few minutes east, is the only beach of naturally dark volcanic sand on the island. It is small and it gets busy, but it is the real thing rather than imported sand.
And the harbour at Caniçal still works as a harbour, which is increasingly rare on this coast.
Boat Trips from Quinta do Lorde Marina
Here is the thing that confuses most people planning this.
Almost every boat trip advertised for Madeira leaves from Funchal. If you are staying on the east of the island and your search keeps returning departures from the other side, that is why it was not matching. Funchal is thirty six kilometres away, which on the VR1 is a reasonable drive, but it is also a drive there and a drive back around whatever you booked.
Marina da Quinta do Lorde is in Caniçal, at the eastern tip, next to the landscape you came to see. Leaving from here, you are already at Ponta de São Lourenço in a few minutes instead of an hour and a half.
We are based at this marina, and all our tours leave from it.
What to Do at Quinta do Lorde Resort
If you are staying inside the resort, the marina is not a destination you drive to. It is downstairs.
From the Hyatt Ziva Madeira, formerly Dreams Madeira, to the marina pontoon is about two hundred and eighty metres. Three to four minutes on foot. No transfer, no parking, no mountain roads.
For families this decides things. The difference between a boat trip that needs an hour in the car each way and one that starts a few minutes from the pool is often the difference between doing it and talking about doing it.
Inside the resort there is also the marina itself to walk, the small chapel, the rock pools and the sea access. If you are coming from outside, the entrance is through the Quinta do Lorde gate and there is a security checkpoint. Say you are going to the marina.
Which Tour Fits Your Day
We are one boat, a Dufour 325 Grand Large called 4WINDS, with a licensed skipper. Every tour is private to your booking, up to six people, priced per boat and not per person. We sail whenever the wind allows, which is not a marketing line: the engine goes off, the boat heels, the noise stops, and that is usually the part people remember.
Sea & Chill
Sea & Chill is three hours, 390 euros. Out along the cliffs of the peninsula, into Baía d'Abra, a stop to swim, and back slowly. Three hours is long enough to see what matters and short enough that nobody gets tired, which with children on board counts for a great deal.
Half Day
The Half Day is four hours, 500 euros. The same coast with time to spare, more swimming stops and a wider stretch of the east coast. This is the one to pick if the sea looks good and you are not in a hurry.
Sunset Tour
The Sunset Tour is three hours, 450 euros. The cliffs turn a deep copper that photographs badly and is remembered well. Departure time moves with the season, so ask when you book.
If you have a whole day, there are two more: the Desertas Islands and the south coast to Cabo Girão, both eight hours and 900 euros.

The Day We Recommend
Early morning on the PR8, before the heat and before the car park fills. Lunch in the village. Then the water in the afternoon, when the light is on your side and your legs have had enough of the wind.
You see the same landscape twice, from the two angles it deserves, and you never leave the eastern tip of the island.
